Day 2

Daily element: Mercury (Hydrargyrum)

Hydrargyrum, Hydrogen and Metneri

Hello everybody!
This is our second day posting in this blog, and today we are going to present you my favourite element, Mercury (Hydrargyrum).

The first thing we have to know is that Mercury, or quicksilver, have 80 exact protons (in the neutral form) and a density of 13,534 g/cm3.
I like this element for his colour, that bright silver, but why does it have that colour? A combination of its electronic configuration, its relative effects and the capacity of reflecting the light in a uniform way are the reason of having that colour.

The curiosity that we bring you today is about mercury's density.
The mercury is a liquid in ambient temperature (0ºC), but the incredible thing is that its density is so high! Its density is enough to make lead or silver coins float in the surface like a boat, and they don't sink.
We really like this curiosity, and we hope you like it too!
Bye!
